The Danish government is ruled by a Parliament (Folketinget) and political parties range from the liberal left to the conservative right. Danes enjoy taking part in democratic decision-making. Danes also believe in power of demonstrations and strikes as a means to improve and protest against prevalent conditions or budget cuts.

Denmark is a member of the European Union, the United Nations, NATO and the Nordic Council. Denmark’s former Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen became the Secretary General of NATO in August 2009.

Denmark was the first country in the world to allow free abortion (October 1973) and to legally acknowledge same sex partnerships (October 1989).
