Denmark is one of three Scandinavian countries situated in northern Europe, with a land border with Germany to the south; while Sweden and Norway are separated from Denmark by narrow seaways, Øresund to the east and Kattegat-Skagerak to the north.
The country has an area of 43,094 sq. km., a population of about 5.5 million and has a number of constituent parts – the Jutland peninsula and 406 islands, of which 81 are inhabited. The Kingdom of Denmark also includes the Faroe Islands (area 1,399 sq. km., population 47,200) and Greenland (area 2,172,600 sq. km., population 55,700).
