Greetings

  • Danes would shake hands when introducing themselves and say their name. First name first, family name follows (e.g. Michael Shields).
  • Danes would greet all the guests, before having a drink and settling down to chat with the guests.
  • Danes would kiss a cheek or give a little hug particularly at the end of an evening.
  • Danes would help a woman on with her coat and hold the door for a woman.
  • Danes would say “goddag” to assistants when they enter a shop and “farvel” when leaving, or alternatively “hej”.
  • Danes would say “velbekomme” when entering a room, where someone is eating.
  • Danes would say “tillykke” to a person who is celebrating or is being celebrated.
  • Danes would always give their name when answering the telephone.
